How does the test work?

The test is organised by the BAMF and taken at approved test providers (usually adult education centres, VHS). You get 60 minutes for 33 multiple-choice questions. Minimum score: 17 of 33. The 33 questions are drawn at random from the public question catalogue (310 questions).

How much does the test cost?

The test fee is 25 € per attempt. If you fail, you can retake the test as many times as you like. The applicant bears the costs themselves — they are not refundable.

Who is exempt?

People with disabilities or illnesses that make taking the test impossible can be exempted. Anyone who holds a German school-leaving qualification is also generally exempt. Children under 16 do not have to take the test.
