Co-naturalisation with the parents' naturalisation
Minor children can be naturalised together with a parent (Miteinbürgerung). The fee is only 51 € per minor child without their own income (instead of 255 € for adults). Requirement: the child lives lawfully in Germany.
Birthright citizenship (jus soli)
Children born in Germany to foreign parents automatically receive German citizenship if, at the time of the birth, at least one parent has had their lawful habitual residence in Germany for five years and holds a permanent right of residence (e.g. a permanent settlement permit, "Niederlassungserlaubnis"). With the StAG 2024 (in force since 27 June 2024), the required period of residence was shortened from eight to five years and the former obligation to choose one citizenship (Optionspflicht) was abolished — however, the requirement of a permanent right of residence remains in place.
Naturalisation of children on their own
Minor children can also be naturalised without their parents being naturalised at the same time, if they meet the requirements themselves — e.g. after a very long period of residence, or if one parent is already German.
