Which certificates are recognized?
The following are recognized: Goethe-Zertifikat B1, telc Deutsch B1, ÖSD Zertifikat B1, DTZ (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer — German test for immigrants), BULATS B1. Successfully completing a German integration course (Integrationskurs) with a B1 result also counts.
What replaces the B1 certificate?
No certificate is needed if you have: a German school-leaving qualification (Hauptschule, Realschule, Abitur), a completed degree from a German university, completed vocational training (Berufsausbildung) in Germany with German as the language of instruction, or many years of working life conducted in German (proof required).
Where can I take the exam?
B1 exams are offered by the Goethe-Institut, telc and other approved test centers. Cost: approx. 100–200 € depending on the provider. Preparation: integration courses (low-cost), adult education centers (Volkshochschulen), online language courses.
Frequently asked questions
Is B1 enough, or do I need B2?
For naturalization, B1 is enough. B2 is not required. The previously available fast-track 3-year naturalization for special integration achievements (which required a C1 level) was abolished without replacement as of 30 October 2025 — a higher language level no longer shortens the waiting period.
What if I am ill and cannot take the exam?
In the case of a permanent illness or disability, you can be exempted from the language requirement. A medical certificate (Attest) from your general practitioner or a specialist is required.
How long is the language certificate valid?
Recognized B1 certificates have no expiry date — they are valid indefinitely.
